CollegeYES

Program Overview

College YES is a 5 year federal Department of Education Investing in Innovation (i3) federal grant. Working with the Alliance for College Ready Public Schools in Los Angeles, Generation YES will implement a Student Technology Leadership program in the 17 Alliance middle and high schools to support the goals of grant. Generation YES will also provide training, site support, an online web environment with proven resources, new tools related to CollegeYES goals, and an online community aimed at increasing communication among Alliance schools.

Funded for five years starting in October 2010 by a nearly $5 million and LA Alliance logo$1 million in private donations, College YES uses engaging and empowering strategies to prepare high-need Alliance middle and high school students to enroll and graduate from college by emphasizing selected new Common Core and College/Career Readiness Standards aligned with ISTE Technology, 21st Century Standards, and California Content Standards. CollegeYES builds on the foundation that the Alliance College-Ready Public Schools have created, including their focus for English Language Learners.

The Model

The CollegeYES Model supports students in their STEM courses and in their Advisory period to:
  • address students' preparedness and expectations related to college
  • help students understand issues of college affordability and the financial aid and college application processes
  • provide support to students from peers and knowledgeable adults
CollegeYES will capture the power of technology to address these goals through:
  • Professional development for teachers
  • The development of a virtual/real learning community
  • The use of a Student Technology Leader (STL) program for peer and teacher support. Each STL will be equipped with an iPad for supporting teachers and tracking student projects.

Focus Areas

Modern tools for modern learning

Generation YES has customized its TechYES Project-based Learning Environment for the College YES schools. In this cloud-based system, teachers create and share custom lesson plans and rubrics for student projects. Students log in to plan and create career and college readiness projects that meet state and national standards, including Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.

Blended learning with cross-campus community support

CollegeYES prepares students with information and resources about careers and colleges, with the goal of increasing the number of students applying and accepted to colleges and completing college.

Support for standards

In College YES, teachers align their curriculum to new standards and collaborate with specially trained Student Technology Leaders (STLs) to integrate technology-infused rigorous project-based learning into their courses. Teachers and counselors work with STLs to integrate projects and long-term career and college portfolios into their CollegeYES Curriculum. STLs will mentor peers to help other students with projects and portfolios. As CollegeYES schools incorporate powerful uses of technology into teaching and learning, it opens up the virtual world of information, resources and tools for students to prepare for careers and college. These resources and tools, along with the projects and college and career portfolios, increase awareness and expectations of students and their families, and support them in planning a pathway to college and careers.
