Daily Oral Language (DOL) Using Flash

Project Information

Project Area: English/Language Arts
GenYES Student Grade Level: 8
School: Rose Hill Junior High School [WA]
School District: Lake Washington Public Schools
Submitted: April 25th, 2005

Learning Objectives, Assessment Plan and Results of Assessment: Partner-Teacher

Learning Objectives:

By doing this project, I will show my partner teacher how technology can be used in the classroom for the Daily Oral Language part of the lesson. Using Flash Macromedia for DOL will speed up the overall efficiency of that class.

Assessment Plan:

I will observe the teacher use Flash Macromedia in class, and I will ask my partner teacher these questions:
- Did the DOL Flash program work?
- Was it useful?
- Did it help the students learn grammar & punctuation?
- Are you going to keep using it in your classroom?

Results of Assessment

Yes, she saw the overall efficiency of using Macromedia Flash for DOL. It took about 33% of the time to do DOL with this Flash file.

Learning Objectives, Assessment Plan, and Results of Assessment: Partner-Teacher's Students

Learning Objectives:

Most students are used to fast paced media. This new DOL is just flashy enough to keep their attention, but will still keep them focused on the sentences. This will improve their grammar skill and keep them interested in DOL.

Assessment Plan:

We can see if the DOL Flash exercise is effective when the students turn in their daily sentences.

Grammar is used everywhere. If the students have learned proper grammar, it will show in their daily assignments and any other writing pieces for the rest of their lives.

Results of Assessment

Yes, they seemed motivated and paid much more attention than before.

Procedures

The steps I will take to complete my project:

1. Create Background- Depending on the sentence, I would make an appropriate background where the sentence will be placed. For example, if the sentence being corrected was a friendly letter, the background would be a piece of paper. A chalkboard is also used for the background in week 17.

2. Set Up the Layers- Usually I'd have 5 key layers. One would be the background, the second is the sentence, the third and forth are navigation buttons, and the 5th is the action layer. An action layer basically tells the player when to stop playing and stay on one frame, where the teacher and students would elaborate on the correction. Then the navigation buttons (back, next) are used to go to the next stop frame (or correction).

3. Start Correcting- Modify the sentence in order on your time line, saving your place with key frames, and apply the stop frames, next, and back buttons.

4. I will meet with my partner teacher and make sure she understands how to follow all of the steps.

5. We will present the project to the students and assess their understanding.

Reflections on Project

Positive GenYES Memories

I enjoyed getting the freedom to choose my own project.

Negative GenYES Memories

Making a good PORT was pretty difficult. However, the hardest thing for me was doing all the extra work required to have a project on the Gen Y sample CD.
