Curriculum
When students are actively involved with the learning there is a greater understanding and knowledge retention. Who is the most involved person with the learning material in the classroom? The teacher. We need our students to be in the teaching role. For this to happen students need the skills and understanding to teach. Gen SCI offers students these skills and opportunities to develop sound presentation skills by teaching, coaching and mentoring others.

Units of Study

Introduction to Gen SCI
Students will be introduced to the structure of Gen SCI and will establish online accounts, including a contract, projects and assessment requirements.

Unit 1 General Computer Knowledge and Troubleshooting
Using the school's computer network as our model, we will learn the basics of the following:

1. General computer knowledge
2. System Software understanding
3. Networking Basics
4. Spreadsheet and database understanding
5. Journaling - documenting process

Unit 2 Computer Construction and Component Identification
Students will deconstruct and rebuild a computer identifying the parts and their function. Emphasis will be placed on self reliance and creating a personalized document of the process through journaling.

Unit 3 Architecture of the Modern Operating System

1. Macintosh System Software
2. Unix System Software
3. Windows System Software

Unit 4 Introduction to Programming

1. "How To" with HTML
2. "How To" with Flash
3. "How To" with PERL
4. "How To" with PHP
5. "How To" with MySQL

Unit 5 Web Design
Identify a technology challenge in the building and compose a proposal. Then create a web resource as a solution in action.

Unit 6 Building Leadership
Students will design and implement a project supporting technology sometime throughout the term.

Unit 7 Building a Portfolio
Documenting process is essential to quality in work and process. Students will construct a personalized reference manual of technology as it relates to school's network topography. The following criteria will be included in the portfolio as

1. Journaling
2. Troubleshooting Documentation
3. Contract
4. Competency Sheets
5. Proficiency Tests
6. Student Record of Accomplishment
