FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Does it have to be a girls-only class? No - although the curriculum guide was written with a girls-only class in mind, there are many principles and practices that would be useful for any classroom. Making technology more acccessible is not necessarily a gender issue, and the project oriented, personal approach used in the Generation GIT curriculum is applicable to many types of students.

What experience does a teacher need to teach Generation GIT? Generation GIT is sometimes taught by a technology teacher, but nearly as often taught by a counselor. Grouping "at risk" girls in a course that addresses their interests in themselves, yet offers them a powerful experience with technology can be very successful. The technology skills needed to teach this course are minimal, and can often be taught in a few hours with a visit from a tech teacher or tech coordinator. The curriculum guide addresses the specific skills needed for each unit.

What grade level does the curriculum guide address? Generation GIT is most often taught in middle school, and the curriculum guide focuses on this age. It is also very appropriate for high school, and can be combined with "life skill" or career requirements. Some of the topics may be too intense for elementary age students. The technology skills are also similar to middle/high school entry level technology courses, and meet the ISTE NETS standards for students. Since this is a project-based class, there will be some varitation in the level of the tech skills of the projects, allowing the students to work to their level of interest and comfort with technology.
