Welcome to the Generation YES Express
May 2006 - 9,031 subscribers
Last month we announced a contest with 10 grand prizes of full GenYES, Generation TECH or TechYES site licenses and we have been deluged with entries - have you sent yours in yet? It's not too late, the deadline is June 9, 2006.

We'll be announcing the winners at NECC in San Diego in July at our 10th anniversary party. If you are coming to NECC, be sure to check below for Generation YES sessions, meetings and of course, the anniversary party!

We've also got another brand new innovation- the Generation YES Presenter's Club. We are making it easier to share your student-powered technology innovations with the world. There are more details below.

Finally, a short Liberia update - I'm just back from two weeks in Monrovia and the progress towards creating a high-tech student centered international school is heartening. The new Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has embraced the plan as part of her vision for Liberia. In between all the other meetings, I spent a few days with a group of 12 year olds who had never seen a camera before, much less held one, and in a few hours they created a beautiful multimedia presentation entitled, "A Day in the Life of Liberian Children." Supporters from around the world have contributed time and money to make the Liberia Renaissance School a reality, but it's the kids who will make this dream come alive.

Thank you all for your wonderful emails about this cause!

Dennis

Speak Up 2005 - Students Setting Technology Trends
Our Voices, Our Future: Student and Teacher Views on Science, Technology and Education, summarizing national data collected online from 185,000 student surveys and 15,000 teacher surveys during Speak Up 2005 is now available at https://www.netday.org/speakup_2005.htm Some highlights:

  • Students are setting trends with their use of technology both in school and out of school, using technology in innovative ways and adopting new technologies to support their learning and lifestyles.
  • Students and teachers want access to up-to-date technology tools at school and they want it to be available when they need it. Students' frustrations result from restrictions to technology use for learning tasks.
  • Teachers' professional use of technology is approaching a comfort level but is not keeping up with the advances in how kids are using technology; there are no significant differences between how younger teachers and older teachers are approaching their technology use.
