And another year bites the dust!

Seems like yesterday when I began my teaching career in an east Los Angeles high school in 1968. Of the 41 years that have followed there have been few as eventful as the one that ends this month. Elections, recession, stimulus and more have indeed shaken things up. From a Generation YES perspective, our view that ALL students can do a LOT more with technology than most schools think is being taken more seriously throughout K-12. Student technology leadership is becoming accepted as a viable, cost effective, and necessary strategy to achieve the true potential of technology in education.

I look forward to working with many more schools in year number 42 and beyond. Have a restful summer.
Forward... Dennis
Congratulations, Weyerhaeuser Student Science Leaders!
Through the generosity of the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, Mill Creek Middle School in the Kent Washington School District established the first chapter of the Weyerhaeuser Student Science Leaders (WSSL) in 2008/09.

On June 15, 2009, the first group of WSSL students presented their projects to Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation Board members in a special event at the school. Each student received a TechYES technology literacy certificate and recognition for their achievements.

The Weyerhaeuser Student Science Leaders use the TechYES Science model to ensure that all Mill Creek seventh graders meet the ISTE NETS standards for technology literacy by creating two high-tech science projects, one exploring a science career and one demonstrating their knowledge of a topic in science.

3,000+ New York Middle School Students Receive National TechYES Certification
More than 3,000 students completed two substantive and creative projects to show they were technology literate. Twenty-seven New York districts have used the TechYES or TechYES Science program to show that all their middle school are technology literate. A strong group of New York Student Technology Leaders provided both technical support to their peers and assessed more than 6,000 projects to ensure they met New York and national ISTE technology standards.

Digital Kids GLEF Digital Generation Project
The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) has just released a wonderful Digital Generation Project. At the heart of this project are videos where youth tell their own stories, "...about engagement, self-directed learning, creativity, and empowerment." No doubt, the students they profiled are amazing and wonderful. We look forward to the day when students like this are the norm, not the exception, and where every student's potential is tapped using modern technology. We salute GLEF for making both these videos and their high-quality supplemental materials available.
