Generation YES Express Spring 2010
|
|
|
|
Greetings,
| This newsletter has a bit of international flair! Both Sylvia and I have travelled nearly twice around the globe this past month to spread the word about student empowerment and the positive impact on technology integration.
The global impact on education of the Internet and computers cannot be denied, but this revolution must include all stakeholders to be successful. Luckily, these fabulous new tools hold the key to include youth as stakeholders in the effort to improve education around the world. New ways to communicate, publish, create, compose, and advocate will emerge as all of us, including youth, invent the future together.
Forward...Dennis

Sharing stories of student empowerment around the world
| Sylvia Martinez keynoted the Australian Computers in Education Conference (ACEC 2010) in Melbourne, Australia this month. Traveling down under for her seventh time, Sylvia's talk, "The 92% Solution" focused on including students as part of the learning community in every school.
Dennis Harper travelled to the Netherlands to speak to several groups of education technology leaders. In return, 26 Dutch principals and other administrators will be visiting Washington on a study trip this week and will meet with Generation YES teachers and students.
The best part of these experiences are the opportunities to learn and share the inspiring stories of students and educators collaborating to make education better. Making these stories more visible can inspire others to try something new for themselves! |
Youth-planned, youth-led TEDx Redmond
|
Generation YES is proud to announce that we are co-sponsoring a TEDx event with Bing. TEDx Redmond will be held September 18, 2010 at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond WA. TEDx events are locally run events similar to the popular speaking series TED. Unlike all other TEDx events, this TEDx will be completely planned, organized, and run by youth. The organizers and speakers will be notable youth in grades 6-10 who are making a difference in their communities. A group of GenYES students from Western Washington area is working with Adora Svitak to plan this event. Adora is 12 years old and the youngest person to ever speak at TED. Her TED talk, What adults can learn from kids, is available online. Watch Adora's video inviation to TEDx-Redmond. More information and signups are on the TEDx-Redmond website. Please share this information with the youth of Washington State! |
TechYES in the Virgin Islands
|
Continuing the international theme - old friends and longtime GenYES teachers Marilyn Piper and Craig Costello are spending their "retirement" teaching in the Virgin Islands. They recently sent us video and photos of the students celebrating their well-deserved TechYES Student Technology Literacy Certificates.

TechYES technology literacy achievement data aligned to NETS-S |
You want quantitative data? We've got quantitative data! The TechYES model of project-based technology literacy has always been aligned to the ISTE NETS-S. Now Generation YES has gone a step further by developing a system that provides a proficiency score for all the NETS-S performance indicators and standards. These scores are based on a research-based and validated performance-based assessment methodology. Click here to download a description of the new TechYES assessment along with sample student, school, district, and state level reports. |
The Power of Student Learning Through Leading - NASSP
|
The February 2010 issue of Principal Leadership, the magazine of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is all about "Real Work". There are dozens of wonderful articles on project-based learning, service learning, civic engagement, advocacy and more. We are proud that the New York State Student Technology Leaders ( NYSSTL) project is showcased in this issue in an article by Teh-yuan Wan, Stacy E. Ward, and Dennis Harper - The Power of Student Learning Through Leading. "When students become the technology leaders in their schools, they help teachers and peers while learning about leadership."Read the whole article (PDF) or review the table of contents for the whole issue. |
